Turun koulukunta 
Turun koulukunnan mitalitaiteilijat eivät kaikki ole turkulaisia, mutta he ovat tavalla tai toisella sidoksissa Turun taideakatemiaan ja Erik Mäkisen toimintaan sen kuvanveiston opettajana. Ryhmälle on ominaista kokeileminen, rohkeus ja uusien tekemisen tapojen etsiminen. Siksi teokset johdattavat helposti pohtimaan niitä ehtoja, jotka oikeuttavat kutsumaan esinettä mitaliksi.
 
Erik Mäkinen itse toteaa seuraavasti. Mitalitaiteen historia Suomessa on suhteellisen lyhyt mutta loistelias. Viime vuosina tosin mitalitaide itsessään on polkenut paikallaan ja se on vain harvoin kuulunut taidekoulujen ja -laitosten opinto-ohjelmiin. Huoli näistä tekijöistä kypsytti minussa päätöksen aloittaa mitalitaiteen opetus Turun kaupungissa. Alussa vaikeuksia tuotti opiskelijoiden jollakin tavoin välinpitämätön asenne tätä "tylsää taidemuotoa" kohtaan. Nykyään monet kuvanveistoa opiskelevat kokevat mitalitaiteen yhtenä rikkaimmista taiteen ilmaisumuodoista ja voisimme järjestää korkeatasoisen opiskelijoidemme tuottaman mitalitaiteen näyttelyn melkein missä päin maailmaa hyvänsä.


About the exhibition

The School of Turku
The medallic artists of the school of Turku are not all from this city, but they are all somehow connected with the Art Academy of Turku and with the activities Erik Mäkinen, their teacher of sculpture. The group is characterized by experimenting, courage and looking for new ways of doing things. Therefore, the works of the group lead us easily to think about the conditions that entitle us to call an object a medal.
 
According to Erik Mäkinen the history of medallic art in Finland is relatively short and yet brilliant. During the past few years, though, medallic art has not been getting anywhere and it is only seldom that it has been a part of the curricula of schools or institutions of art. These alarming factors helped me with the decision to start the teaching of medallic art in Turku. In the beginning, it was the somehow indifferent attitude of the students towards this "dull form of art" that caused a few problems. Today, many students of sculpture regard medallic art as one of the richest forms of artistic expression, and we could arrange a high-class exhibition of medallic art of our students almost anywhere in the world.
